Following media coverage last year highlighting the high sodium levels in the bore water used by the community, and previous discussions with community members, a Food Forum was held in Walgett, NSW, Australia. It was hosted by Yuwaya Ngarra-li, a community-led partnership between the Dharriwaa Elders Group (DEG) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
The forum was attended by over 50 people from all aspects of the Walgett community. Jacqui Webster presented on the sodium levels in the water and effective community interventions to improve the food environments worldwide. Proposals to address the supply of available nutritious food and action to reduce sodium levels in water were discussed by the forum attendees and are being developed into an action plan.
