Published in the Portuguese Journal of Public Health on the 29th of October 2020, Graca, Gregorio and Freitas reviewed food- and nutrition-related policies and progress in Portugal over the last decade. The authors reflected on the main strategic documents, namely “The Platform against Obesity” (2007 – 2011), the “Promotion of Healthy Eating” (2012 – present) and the “Integrated Strategy for the Promotion of Healthy Eating” (2017 – present). They discuss the measures implemented and the results achieved from each of these strategies. While the author’s reflected on many achievements, they also highlighted that the biggest challenges to effective public policy implementation have been the interventions focused on changing food environments. It was discussed that changes to food environments are one of the areas with the biggest scope for impact, and that overcoming these challenges should be a focus for nutrition policy in Portugal in the coming years.
