A new report from Public Health England has demonstrated that there has been no further reduction in salt intake in England from 2014 to 2018. Prepared by Robert Ashford et al, the report used the gold standard measurement of 24-hour sodium excretion and showed that the mean salt intake in adults aged 19 to 64 years is 8.4 g/day, accounting for 9.2 g/day in men and 7.6 g/day in women. The distribution of salt intake ranged from 2.7 g/day to 17.8 g/day in the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles respectively. Out of a total of 2,061 eligible individuals to participate in the study, 41% (835) declined to take part. Of the 865 urine collections analysed, 596 (67%) were deemed ‘complete’ (useable).
