The George Institute for Global Health are part of two successful Resolve to Save Lives, LINKS grants this year. The highly competitive grants of over US$2.3million in total will be supporting programs that promote heart health in 18 countries. The George Institute alongside Ministry of Health Malaysia, National University of Malaysia and WHO Office in Malaysia were awarded a two-year grant to determine salt levels in street foods to: 1) inform consumer campaign messages about high-salt foods to avoid, 2) accelerate mandatory sodium labelling so food vendors can select lower salt ingredients, and 3) identify and engage food industries producing high-salt foods in reformulation. The George Institute, alongside the University of Pretoria, Heart and Stroke Foundation SA and Discovery Vitality, is also part of the grant awarded to the University of Wollongong to encourage enforcement of mandatory sodium targets in processed foods in South Africa by developing monitoring systems to evaluate how well the food industry is complying with the sodium targets.
