A recent review by Thout SR et al aimed to update the evidence on population salt intake globally, following the 2010 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. Studies that measured salt intake using 24-hour urine collection in a nationally representative sample between January 2011 and September 2018 were included.
Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria, from the United States, Canada, Benin, India, Samoa, Fiji Barbados, Australia, New Zealand and four from Europe. Mean population salt intake was found to be higher in Benin, Fiji and Samoa, and lower in Italy, England, Canada and Barbados than the corresponding country estimates in the GBD study.
Population salt intakes ranged from 10.66g/day in Portugal to 6.75g/day in Benin. Authors concluded that additional efforts are needed to monitor salt intake and to implement effective salt reduction strategies.
