A study was conducted by the WHO in the Republic of Moldova in 2016, aiming to establish baseline levels of population intake of sodium, potassium and iodine, using 24-hour urine tests on a nationally representative sample (n=858; aged 18-69 years).
The survey further assessed knowledge, attitudes, practices and behaviours related to salt consumption. Average daily salt intake in rural areas was 11.3g of salt, and 10.0g per day in urban areas. Further, salt content of a sample of most frequently sold foods was measured by laboratory analysis.
Bread was found to be the biggest contributor of salt in the diet, with a mean salt content of 1.85g/100g of food with an average consumption of 300g of bread per day.
